Book Chums expresses Pleasure at the release of Javed Akhtars Lava

February 28, 2012, Pune, India: Popular Bollywood lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar released his latest anthology of poems titled ‘Lava’ in New Delhi. Lava was first released at the 2012 Jaipur Literature Festival and we had reported it on twitter.

About the dip in the interest in poetry, Javed Akhtar had earlier commented that the generation had changed a lot and poetry had lost its value. However he was hopeful that despite the lack of interest, there are many people who are still interested in it.  He feels that the younger lot has forgotten the art of poetry because it was never a part of an education system and their environment. His new collection, he said was a reflection of his thoughts that went beyond the realms of Bollywood.

Akhtar’s previous collection of poetry Tarkash was released fourteen years ago and he read out poems such as Shabana, Mela and Doraha. Vice President of India, M. Hamid Ansari and Akhtar’s family that included noted film personalities Shabana Azmi, Zoya Akhtar and Farhan Akhtar were present at the event.

Book Chums expresses Joy at the release of The Kashmiri Storyteller by Ruskin Bond

March 8, 2012, Pune, India: Popular travel and children’s writer Ruskin Bond released his latest book, The Kashmiri Storyteller. These eleven recollections and stories were written 40 years ago.

  The Kashmiri Storyteller is a book that takes the reader back in time of days when Ruskin Bond was a small boy and lived with his grandparents in Dehradun. The narrator is an old Kashmiri who on a winter's evening, would light his angithi and entertain the children who came to his shop in the Landour bazaar.

He narrates a wide range of stories from the Man-Whom-Nothing-Could-Please to the sagacious Kazi who was sensitive enough to believe that a crow could carry a message. His stories also take a tilt towards the paranormal and the eerie and then lands with narrations of love & romance and banter & humor. Adding to the highlights of stories such as The Hill of the Forty Brothers, Brides for Seven Princes, In the Land of the Peris and A Very Tall Story, the illustrations in the book are remarkable.

BookChums expresses Excitement at the Release of Aleph by Paulo Coelho

March 12, 2012, Pune, India: Popular Brazilian author Paulo Coelho released his most-recent book – Aleph. This book is based on his journey across Asia in 2006. It is an autobiographical account of his experiences. 

Paulo Coelho has discussed how Aleph is the title of a shortstory by his favorite author Jorge Luis Borges. He says he has always been drawn to the idea of Aleph and this book happens to be his most-personal novel.

It is based on a journey that he undertook that revived his faith. He travels across Asia, Africa and Europe via the Trans-Siberian railway. He meets a woman named Hilal, someone he loved five hundred years ago! It is a journey back in time and of the present where they learn about compassion, love, courage and forgiveness. It throws a fundamental question at the reader whether we are where we want to be and whether we are doing what we want to do.

BookChums reports on Meluhas film adaptation

Last heard, Amish Tripathi's ShivaTrilogy on the retelling of Lord Shiva's story was all set to be made into a film. The third book of the trilogy is not yet out, and film producer and director Karan Johar has acquired the rights for the books. So far, two books of the trilogy have made it to the stores. The first one is of course, 'The Immortals of Meluha,' which was followed by 'The Secret of the Nagas' in August 2011.

Karan Johar has finally tweeted on the potential film. He says that, "We are going to lock a director first..." It is only then that work on the screenplay shall commence, and then the casting will ensue, the most important question in the air is - who will play the coveted role of Lord Shiva?

 

We may already have the answer for the grapevine is that Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra will play Lord Shiva and Parvati respectively. The speculation has gained strength after the Agneepath adaptation crossed the Rs.100-crore mark. That the lead pair have a sizzling onscreen chemistry and have been a hit with the audience would be factors that should clinch the deal. It is not yet clear if there will be three films, for now we know that the film will be an adaptation of 'The Immortals of Meluha', the first book of the trilogy by Amish Tripathi.

‘Meluha’ tells about the Guna tribe who are invited to  move from their violence and conflict ruptured land to Meluha, where the promise of peace and a better life awaits the tribe. The denizens of Meluha see Lord Shiva as their saviour; they are even more convinced when Lord Shiva consumes a healing potion that permanently turns his throat blue. Lord Shiva has agreed to help the Meluhans defeat the Chandravanshi-Naga alliance, but realizes during the journey the choices he made in life has led to various consequences. Tripathi wrote on the premise that all gods were humans once and rose to prominence by their deeds.
